At present, rare earth elements in coal and coal products have always been a hot topic in the field of coal geology. Compared with traditional rare earth minerals, coal ash is generally regarded as an important alternative resource for obtaining rare earth elements. Therefore, many domestic and foreign scholars have been attracted to study the content distribution, geological origin, occurrence state and extraction technology of rare earth elements in coal ash.

Recently, Professor Dai Shifeng's team published the latest research results on the distribution characteristics and chemical extraction of rare earth elements in Coal ash in the famous International Journal of Coal Geology. In this study, raw coal and coal ash from Luzhou Power Plant in Sichuan Province were used as the main objects. The geochemical and mineralogical characteristics were studied in detail by means of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy spectrum. The behavior characteristics of rare earth elements in the coal burning process and the distribution of coal ash after combustion are discussed. It is found that rare earth elements are obviously enriched in Luzhou coal, and the content of rare earth elements in coal ash is about 2-3 times of that in coal, and the heavy rare earth elements in fly ash are more enriched than that in bottom ash. The minerals in the coal are mainly clay minerals such as kaolinite and Aemon mixed layer, and contain a small amount of carbonate minerals. Coal ash is mainly composed of amorphous vitreous body, containing mullite, quartz and other minerals. The results show that more than 90% of the rare earth elements in fly ash are distributed in the vitreous body, while less than 50% of the rare earth elements in the bottom ash are distributed in the vitreous body. An acid-base leaching method was proposed to extract rare earth elements from fly ash. Active silicon was removed from fly ash by NaOH and rare earth elements were extracted by HCl. According to the principle of orthogonal experimental design, the leaching reaction conditions were optimized, and nearly 90% of rare earth elements were effectively extracted from fly ash, while about 40% of impurity silicon was removed. This field of rare earth element discovery is not only limited to a certain ore, but also exists in a lot of seemingly insignificant waste residue, and this research discovery increases the source of rare earth, to achieve the diversity of resources, but also indicates that China has made significant progress in research, showing that science and technology have made progress!
